What you need to know before getting a cat
Cats are great company, making them the second most popular pet in the world. Likeable as they are, there are some things you need to know before getting a cat. They come in so many different shapes, sizes and personalities, there is a perfect cat for all! All cats are different, even the ones born in the same litter! Their behavior depends on their inherent personality and early socialization. Some cats take time to come out of their shell, to express their vibrant personalities. They take time to trust their new environment and owner, these cats are most likely nervous or lack early socialization.
Getting a cat is a very important decision, it is not one to be made overnight. It is a lifetime commitment! Cats can live up to 15+ years and you should only consider getting one if you are ready to spend the next 15 years of your life with a feline companion. There is a common misconception that cats are low maintenance and can often fend for themselves. Cats need a reliable routine that ensures a comfortable and safe environment. They are very susceptible to stress, which can be caused by unexpected changes to their environment, routine etc. A stressed cat is not a healthy cat! Although it may be difficult to pick your perfect feline companion, we guarantee you that you can bring the best out of your feline pal by making them feel safe and loved.
What are your limitations?
1) How much time are you willing to spend with your cat?
- Cats need attention, even the ones that are aloof most of the time. They want to feel loved and cared for. It is true that cats meow to get their human’s attention!
- They also need a regularly clean litter box. Some cats are so picky that you might have to clean the litter box twice a day.
- They need to be groomed regularly as well. This includes occasional claw trimming (yes, plan on getting bruised for this one) and brushing. And this just sums up how much time you would need to spare for your fur pal on a daily or weekly basis.
2) How much money are you willing to spend?
Did you know that most cats are very picky? This means you would have to have trial runs on almost everything they need; food, litter, toys etc. (even medications!)
Cat-sitters and cat hotels; always have a hold of one or the other in case you have to take an unexpected business trip or that month-long vacation trip to Bali. If you plan on flying your fur pal with you for your exciting trip, well that’s going to cost you some bucks too.
Vet bills! Ka-ching. You would have to take them for annual or bi-annual vet checkups to keep up with their general health and vaccinations. Also, you would have to start saving up for unexpected veterinary bills. On one hand cats can easily get stressed which may be the reason they could get sick or they are the masters of disguise for some chronic diseases.
What are your expectations for your feline?
Cats are the ideal pet for the modern apartment lifestyle, they are somewhat independent and have lower maintenance requirements than dogs. However, all cats are different and some do require more care than others. When choosing the perfect breed that suits you, you will have to decide according to your lifestyle. Most people prefer cat companionship because of their busy and stressful lifestyles. They prefer their feline pal to be their calm relaxing companion from their busy day of work, not an addition to their stress. Do keep in mind some breeds cannot be left home alone for long hours, can demand a lot of attention, or are very active; ignoring these behavioral attributes might make them destructive, stressed and unhappy
What unexpected things to expect?
I’ve made a list of all the little things you might have to get used to and some unfortunate things that can happen.

- Although most cats are kept indoors, they easily get themselves into trouble! You must have finances for emergency cases.
- Most cats do not like unexpected changes, this means a newcomer might not be welcome. But they are not as fuzzy as dogs.
- You might wanna expect unwanted presents from your outdoor cat. They are very generous at times with their hunts.
- Having to clean the litter boxes multiple times in a day. Some cats are very picky on cleanliness!
