Maine Coon breed
Description
The Maine Coon is the largest breed of domestic cat. They are absolutely enormous: the largest cat in the world is a Maine Coon with a body that is 123cm long! The Maine Coon has a square muzzle and high cheekbones, with large tufted eyes and big, round eyes. The body is muscular, with a broad chest. They have sturdy, wide set legs, and fluffy toes; they may also be polydactyl, meaning that they have more than the usual number of toes. The tail is magnificent, carried upright like a plume or banner, with thick, flowing fur.
Look
The Maine Coon has a luxurious long coat, with thick, shiny fur, with a wide variety of colours and markings. The fur is longer on the sides and neck; on the latter it can resemble a mane or ruff, making the Maine Coon resemble a tiny lion. The outer coat is silky, and the inner coat is soft and downy for warmth, adapted for the harsh winters of their native Maine. Maine Coons shed copiously, but daily brushing will help to remove excess hair and prevent tangles.
Health
Although Maine Coons are quite healthy cats, they are prone to certain health conditions. • Hip dysplasia • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy • Polycystic kidney disease • Spinal muscular atrophy At KittenGuru.com, we recommend that you buy your kitten from reputable breeders, who use genetic testing and good breeding practices to remove genetic conditions from their breeding lines. Temperament
The Maine Coon is the gentle giant of the cat world. They are playful and friendly to both family and new friends, and even get on well with other pets. Although they enjoy being around people, they aren’t clingy and have an independent streak. Don’t worry; they’ll check in with you for an affectionate cuddle or to meow or chirrup to you. From kittenhood to adulthood, the Maine Coon remains playful and loves to clown about. The Maine Coon is also intelligent and can be trained to do various tricks.
Living with
The Maine Coon should be perfectly content as a housecat, but you can indulge in their taste for the outdoors by taking them on walks; most Maine Coons are easy to harness train. These clever cats are very capable of learning tricks, and may become bored without something to do. You can give them puzzle toys, or play fetch with them. Their playful nature makes them fun for all the family, and your children will adore their new playmate.
