About Ragdoll Cat breed
Description
The breed owes its origins to cat lover Ann Baker from California. She was engaged in breeding Persians and bought kittens from a neighbour, which were a mixture of Persian and Angora, and many of the kittens were very calm. The Ragdoll cat combines great looks with excellent character traits. This breed is the third-largest after the Savannah and the Maine coon.
Look
The cat’s head has a high, wide forehead, with a slightly upturned nose. The ears are widely spaced and slightly rounded at the top. Perhaps the most striking feature, the eyes of the Ragdoll are large and almond-shaped, always blue in colour. Male adults can grow very large, up to 1 meter in length, while the females tend to be slimmer. The fur can be of medium length, or long and silky to the touch. This cat has three colour varieties: colour-point, mitted and bicolour.
Health
Although the Ragdoll is a generally healthy cat, it is prone to certain health conditions:
• Obesity.
• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
• Urinary tract issues
• Hairballs, due to a long coat.
At KittenGuru.com, we recommend that you buy your kitten from reputable breeders, who use genetic testing and good breeding practices to remove genetic conditions from their breeding lines. KittenGuru.com’s Health Guarantee certifies that all promoted kittens are in good health.
Temperament
The Ragdoll’s character is very peaceful and pleasant. This cat loves to be around their human, openly showing affection, and observes everything that their person does . The ragdoll cat can hardly endure loneliness, so it shouldn’t be left alone for extended periods of time. Need for companionship aside, the Ragdoll is highly adaptable to its living environment, and one of the most peaceful cats around. This beauty is sociable with other cats and great with kids, perfect for any family who can dedicate time to their cat.
Living with
Its high intelligence and excellent quick wit allow the ragdoll to quickly master toilet training, using a scratching post, and walking on a harness. This breed is gentle by nature and should not be trained by any means of negative reinforcement. It is important to note that due to their musculature, the Ragdoll does not always land on its feet and could hurt itself by falling on its side. Due to the lack of an undercoat, its fur is easier to maintain, though we do suggest introducing grooming practices early to help the kitten get used to it.
