About Scottish Fold Cat breed
Description
The characteristic “fold” of the ears is what gives the Scottish Fold its name. The fold is caused by a cartilage and bone abnormality. Some cats from this breed do have normal ears, and are known as “straights”; one famous “straight” is Maru “the box cat”. Apart from the folded ears, the typical Scottish fold has a round head, with wide eyes and a broad nose. The body is similarly rounded, and so are the feet. The tail may be medium length or long, with a tapered shape. The Highland Fold and Scottish Straight are variations of the breed, with the former having a longer coat of fur and the latter having upright ears.
Look
Both Long and Short-haired Scottish Folds exist. Cats with short hair have a dense, plush coat with a soft, fluffy texture. Long-haired cats have a full coat, but often with shorter hair on the face and legs. The hind legs are very fluffy, resembling fluffy pantaloons, and the tail is plumy. The ears and toes are tufted. The Scottish Fold’s coat can be almost any colour and pattern. Shedding depends on how fluffy your Scottish Fold is: fluffier cats will shed more. Regular brushing will help reduce shedding and prevent tangles, though long-haired individuals may occasionally need a bath.
Health
Although Scottish Folds are quite healthy cats, they are prone to certain health conditions. Note that generally, Scottish Straight cats are slightly healthier than Scottish Folds.
• Osteochondrodysplasia (leads to severe degenerative joint problems)
• Polycystic kidney disease
• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
At KittenGuru.com, we recommend that you buy your kitten from reputable breeders, who use genetic testing and good breeding practices to remove genetic conditions from their breeding lines. KittenGuru.com’s Health Guarantee certifies that all promoted kittens are in good health.
Temperament
The Scottish Fold is a congenial cat, with a placid nature and an air of serenity. They get on well with just about everyone; humans and animals alike. They tend to become very attached to their family members, with whom they are very affectionate. The downside of their gregarious natures is that Scottish Folds do get lonely and sad without their humans, though another cat will make an excellent companion for when you aren’t around. On the whole, Scottish Folds are playful and clever, though they have a slight stubborn streak.
Living with
This affable feline will win you over with its affectionate nature, and make you laugh with its bizarre poses. Scottish Folds often lie on their backs with their paws in the air, or pose like a meerkat on two legs. Your Scottish Fold will occasionally chirrup at you, but is generally a quiet cat. Although they enjoy the great outdoors, it may be best to supervise their trips outside, or to walk them on a leash.
